A Pet Story

We all know kids are naturally generous. And we can learn a lot from them. We can learn that once we start giving we are always in the flow of life and all good things come to us. As a kid, and even now, I get a lot of gifts given to me from animals. They’re great teachers too.

When I was a little kid my family went to Laurel Lake in upstate New York for a vacation. I found a beautiful Calico Kitten wandering around lost, so I gave it to my older sister. We named her Laurie. She lived a full life and eventually passed on. Several years later after we had moved to Florida I found another Calico Kitten. What a coincidence. I gave it to my sister again.

One cold morning  she went out to start her car and had a tragedy. The kitten had crawled up into the fan housing to get warm and was killed when she started her car. Six  months later  I was outside playing when I heard a meowing. It took me a while to find the source but when I did, it was coming from her car. It was a Calico Kitten that had crawled up into the fan housing. What a coincidence. So naturally, as was my pattern, I gave the Kitten to my sister. She believed it was a reincarnation, and that was good because her sadness over her lost kitten completely went away.

Many  years later after I had moved out and was on my own, a Calico Kitten wandered into my sign shop. She walked over to me, jumped up on my lap, and then onto my desk. She sat there staring at me intently as if to say “well, are you going to keep me this time or not?’’ and I had the weirdest feeling. So I took her home. At night she would crawl up on my chest and  just lay there staring at me and purring until we went to sleep. I learned to sleep flat on my back. I also learned to purr. We lived happily ever after.

I guess we were meant to be together all along. I suppose this Divine Universe keeps giving all us kids lots of opportunities for Love.  And also chances to choose Love.  Have you ever noticed the things that keep coming around asking you for Love?

Now I have this deer named Mabel who pokes her head in my door every morning to say hello. She sleeps under my deck. If I walk around the yard she follows me, she’s been a part of our household for several years.

I believe she is in retirement and our home is sort of an assisted living arrangement for her. I think she’s teaching us that Earth can look a lot like heaven if we let it, what a gift that is.

But the quirkiest thing is what happened today. I have been thinking about writing this article and I’ve been having fond memories of my cat, so on my way home today I stopped at Raven’s Tavern in Conifer to give Victoria (The Owner) a book. She had this tiny white kitten in her hand and as I gave her the book she asked me if I wanted a kitten.

I named it YODA because it has funny ears and very wise eyes. He’s so small I put him in my shirt pocket and drove home. I got another profound lesson. Whatever you think about comes into your life. So now, I have my cat again.
