The Journey of a Lifetime

Perhaps the journey of a lifetime is simply the journey through one perfect day. Maybe we can look at it like this; we are born each morning into a fresh new life and at the end of sixteen hours we lay down and peacefully pass away. Then we do it again the next day. Some people live the same day over and over again. If this is happening to you, consider watching the movie Groundhog Day.

In the movie the main character awakens after a typical cynical and negative day, and realizes that it’s the same day again. He remains cynical and negative and voila, the next day he awakens trapped in the same day again. He starts freaking out and begins trying to kill himself but he always awakens in the same day again. This goes on for a while until it occurs to him that he could have some fun and he experimenting with the same events as they continue to occur.

After a while he begins to realize his basic goodness and notices the joy he experiences when he gives a little love and kindness. In each repetitive act he sees his old stinginess, he sees how he judges others, he sees how callous and cynical he has been. One act at a time he begins to transform his day. He knows that the Universe keeps sending him the same opportunities again and again until he gets it right.

On his epic journey he realizes that the greatest distance to travel is often the space between two people.

He reaches out a hand to others. He helps, he gives, and he feels happy for the first time in his life. He learns to play the piano. It was something he kept putting off, but once he realized the difference that a little time each day could make he took it up. He becomes content with his repetitive life and eventually he has one perfect day. All the little vignettes are perfect. He helps everyone and has a joyous day. He plays the piano and feels loved and happy. He awakens into a new day. It is a wonderful day, he has created a wonderful life, and he has graduated with honors.

If you would like to transform your life, awaken each day into a fresh new life. Fill your heart with wonder at what might occur today. Notice how you interact with people. Do things a little better. Love a little more. Don’t worry if you make mistakes, you will get another chance. And if you really want to transform yourself, review each day. After all, it is the end of your life. Before you drift off to sleep play the day back, starting with the most recent event. Go backwards until you reach the morning starting point when you first came alive. That is a complete review of your life. Doing this practice for three weeks will completely change you. You will see the vast expanse that you travel in one day. You will learn to see the patterns in every little vignette that occurs, and you will be amazed at the miraculous changes which occur for you.
