Once upon a time there was an Ocean named Theo.

Theo was a good ocean, Theo had everything. Theo was complete and filled with wonderful things, always new, beautiful, eternal, and constant. Theo was all Love. Happiness was not a word to Theo because there was never anything else but happiness, there was no need for a word. But nonetheless Theo was a very happy complete Ocean.

And then one day there was a current. It was just a subtle current at first but soon it moved a bit of Theo’s Oceanness around and all of a sudden Theo’s self went out to this current and identified with it. In that moment the current named itself. Never before had any bit of Theo named itself. This was a very interesting development.

The little bit of Theo’s essence named itself Dave. Dave was a wave. The very first one ever to self actualize from the vastness of  Theo. Dave rose upon the surface and looked out. There was nothing out there. Dave was quiet. His rising created a wind. It was the very first air current, It named itself Mind. Mind moved and another wave arose. Theo barely noticed but did register something interesting going on. Mind, (the wind) blew, and new waves arose, and the new waves named themselves and began doing their own thing.

They began to dance and forgot that they were Theo. Theo barely noticed. But the waves began to pretend that they had separate lives. Whenever Dave would rise up upon the surface he would look out and feel lonely until he saw another wave. Then he longed to hold that wave, to merge with it, and love it. He forgot that they were connected already in an Ocean of absolute Love and abundance.

So he chased wave after wave, but they all disappointed him. He chased so many possibilities but could not fill the void that he felt. He pined away at the beautiful other waves as they would arise. But every wave he captured or contacted or created left him disappointed, so much possibility but it always seemed to be slipping away. “Everything here always disappears”, he said sadly. He had forgotten that he was Theo playing a Game as wave.

Dave got sadder and tried to improve himself. He must just not be good enough, he thought. He felt incomplete, he needed something but didn’t know what it was. He must work harder on improving himself so he can capture and hold some other waves, maybe that would help. He chased and struggled and tried everything to get what he needed but alas, everything always faded away. Where did it go? Then Dave the Wave created an explanation. The waves and all the thing s he saw on the surface DIED. And as you know when you create a name the concept seems to exist so Dave the Wave named death, and death was born. Some of the other waves embraced it and created a fantasy that death was the way back to a dimly remembered happiness.  Religions were formed around the belief that if you died you could return to the happy place so dimly remembered. They just didn’t realize that they need only relax and let go for a little while and they would return.

Finally after many years of suffering Dave sort of gave up, he let go and  surrendered his waveness. He just sank  in for a moment and discovered boundless joy. He was so surprised to discover he was in himself, he was Theo again, full of all good things, complete at last, with endless creativity, and boundless Joy he returned to his Oceanic self. But never forgot the strange adventure he once had as Dave the Wave.

Sometimes, just like “Dave the wave” Fish don’t know they live in an ocean until you take them out of it. Then they Know. Boy do they ever. And so it was with Dave. But he was sure glad to be back inside himself. And so it is with me and you. We are the Ocean, all connected. We need just relax and slip back under the waves for a few minutes every day and we will  remember. Love.
